One of the biggest drawbacks to using wood railroad ties is the frequent use of creosote as a preservative in wood railroad ties. Coal Tar Creosote is a commonly used wood preservative found in many wooden applications such as telephone poles, rail ties, and switch ties.

While creosote is useful as a wood preservative, it is an extremely toxic substance. The health effects of creosote range from irritation of the skin to more serious issues related to the liver or kidneys, and in some cases even death. Research done by the International Agency for Research on Cancer has concluded that creosote is possibly a human carcinogen.

Given the hazards of wood treated with preservatives such as creosote, many rail companies have begun replacing their wood railroad ties with composite railroad ties made without creosote.
